Common Questions Customers Ask Roofing Contractors

Answers to these questions that homewoners commonly ask will provide you with valuable insight into the world of roofing. Most likely, you have already asked some of these questions yourself or will ask them in the future when you need your roof replaced or repaired. This background knowledge will enable you to make wiser decisions about your roof that will ultimately benefit your home and your family for years to come.

Can my roof be repaired?

The answer is almost always YES! Experienced roofing contractors can fix many roofing problems, including replacing blown off or damaged shingles, and fixing leaks, holes, mold, rot and other damage. If your current roof cannot be repaired due to extensive damage, a good roofing contractor can replace your roof entirely and install a brand new, high performance roof that will add beauty to your home.

Remember, if you do need your roof replaced, it is good practice to remove the current shingles before installing the new ones, as opposed to layering the new shingle on top of the old. There are several reasons for this. When you layer shingles, you are making your roof heavier, which may compromise your home’s structural integrity. Also, manufacturer’s warranties often won’t cover shingles laid in this way do to the warping that can occur when shingles aren’t placed down flat on a clean roof. If shingles can’t conform to the roof properly, they won’t seal properly either, which means they won’t last as long as they would if installed correctly. They will be more prone to being blown off the roof and more easily succumb to damage. Another disadvantage is that your roofing contractor won't be able to inspect the roofing deck for current damage or moisture problems before installing the new roof.

How much will it cost to install a new roof?

The answer to this question will vary greatly, depending on who you are working with, the square footage of your roof, the type of shingle you decide on, the quality of materials the roofing contractor uses to install the roof, and the permit, license and labor costs. Feel free to contact Hedrick Construction if you would like to receive a free estimate of how much it would cost to replace your roof.

How long will it take to install a new roof?

Again, this greatly depends on who you are working with and the size of your home. Weather also plays a major role. On average, replacing a residential roof will take anywhere from one day to a few days (maybe longer), depending on the complexity of the project.

What should I have checked when I’m having my roof repaired or inspected?

Make sure during your annual roof inspection, or when you are having a certain part of your roof repaired, that your roofing contractor checks all necessary areas. They should inspect the chimney, vents, and skylights for dried out or disintegrating caulk, cracks, missing pieces, or any other damage. Also have them inspect the gutters and downspouts for missing caulk, peeling paint, rotting, cracks, holes, missing pieces, or leaks. Have them repositioned if they are positioned incorrectly. Also have your roofer check for mold, moss, rot, missing granules on shingles, exposed nail heads, and cracking, warping, peeling, or blown off shingles.

How do I know I’m choosing a good roofing contractor?

Get detailed quotes from multiple roofing contractors that you know are reputable, professional, experienced, and trustworthy. It is very helpful to talk with people who have previously had their roofs replaced with certain contractors. Ask them if their roofing contractor finished the job properly and on time, cleaned up after the job, and stood by their contract.
